Methodology

Using a compilation of different rankings and ratings, we can create a list of the best law schools in the world.

To assemble this list, we looked at four sets of rankings/ratings. First, U.S. News publishes its ranking of Best Global Universities 2018-2019 which includes one category for Best National Law Schools 2018-2019 and provides six different types of information:

reputation as an institution among peer institutions, including an academic reputation subcategory; quality of faculty; selectivity; undergrads earning GPAs or ACT scores that are at least 3 standard deviations from the average 25th percentile cut score for students on the ACT or SAT; student to faculty ratio in UG programs and 6 other factors considered during their selection process.

United States

Harvard University Harvard University is ranked the #1 law school in the United States. Graduates are valued for their academic excellence and lauded for their professional accomplishments. Students can study at the Law Schools or Harvard’s other schools like Arts and Sciences, Education, Business, or Engineering. Expect a rigorous course load with honors classes (without grades), plenty of extracurricular opportunities, and a no-surprises grading system.

Canada

Queen’s University Faculty of Law is located in Kingston, Ontario. It offers a four-year J.D. degree with specializations in regulatory law, international and comparative law, public Law Schools , criminal law and legislation, property law, administrative law, and tax and constitutional litigation.

University of Toronto Faculty of Law was established in 1843 to train lawyers for the middle class. In the past year, it has ranked first in Canada for its Global Mobility Program where students can study at top international universities all over the world.

University of Ottawa Faculty of Law has two campuses in Ottawa and Montreal which allow for diverse learning environments.

United Kingdom and Ireland

As the competition among law schools increases and high-profile institutions like Harvard, Yale, and Stanford continue to rise in the rankings, so do the lesser-known institutions in the United States. Programs such as Vanderbilt University’s JD/MBA are more heavily recruited by students looking for both a stellar undergraduate degree and graduate school experience;

Northwestern Pritzker School o Law Schools has a joint JD/MBA program with Kellogg; and Yale School of Management (YSM), there is also an accelerated law program that lets MBA students earn their JDs on campus in three years or less. At Duke University’s renowned program, there are dual JD/MBA degrees offered, too.

Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong, and South Africa

Australia’s law school rankings have shifted dramatically. They’ve gone from 12th in 2013 to 22nd in 2017 and this fall, the University of Melbourne rose to fourth place.

Singapore has a total of four universities and each of them is within the top 20 globally. New Zealand and Hong Kong are tied for 23rd with just one university apiece.

Both countries have benefited from China’s reforms, but New Zealand’s UOL is facing an uncertain future because enrollment there has declined by more than 50% over the last three years. With no change to its ranking, South Africa ranks 23rd with UNISA taking up the majority of those spots.

France ties for seventh place on this list with three universities each ranking within the top 50 in the world.
