If you’re considering attending law school but haven’t decided which institution to apply to, you might be wondering what the most conservative and liberal schools are right now.
To help you choose where to apply, we’ve compiled data on the top 20 conservative and liberal schools according to the results of School Admissions Test (LSAT) scores released by the Law School Admission Council (LSAC). If you want to attend one of the most conservative or liberal law schools in the country, make sure you check out these lists before deciding!
American University Washington College of Law
Created in 1878, American University Washington College is one of the oldest schools in the nation. AUWCL was founded by an act of Congress and helped shape the architecture of many others that came after it. AUWCL has six esteemed Juris doctor programs:
Environmental, Intellectual Property & Technology, International Trade & Economic Development, Nonprofit Management & Public Leadership, Real Estate & Taxation, and Social Work (online). Northwestern Pritzker School of Law
In 2018, Northwestern’s School became the first school in the country to open a center dedicated to exploring the role of conservatives in the legal profession. That school’s most popular major is ranked third out of America’s top ten.
Wake Forest University School of Law
Students at Wake Forest are not lacking when it comes to extracurricular activities, especially because one-third of students participate in clinical education. There are more than 70 clinical opportunities for students, including student organizations for Trial Advocacy, Environmental, Transactional Litigation, Entertainment & Media among others.
Georgetown University Law Center
We use LSAC data to compile a list of schools with the most conservative and liberal students in the class of 2022. Here are our results:

#5: Columbia University School of (60% liberal)
George Mason University Antonin Scalia School of Law
George Mason University’s Antonin Scalia School has always been one of the more conservative schools in the country. Their ranking in terms of political affiliation is #7, with only Northwestern University as a greater conservative school. Given that they were also ranked #17 overall, they’re still one of the better schools in the country. Whether you’re looking for a more liberal or conservative environment, George Mason should be on your list.
Harvard Law School
With 12% of students at Harvard reporting as Republican, Harvard ranks first in the proportion of conservative and libertarian students. For example, three out of the six school trustees are listed as conservatives. Yale School ranks second with 7% of the student body registering as Republican.
For example, one-third of all board members identify as such. Cornell School has 6% registered Republicans, with four identified members on their advisory boards who are conservative or libertarians. Duke and the University of California-Berkeley have 5%. Berkeley has four conservative alumni who are very involved in campus political discussions for instance and Duke is listed by some notable conservatives as a college to watch.
Stanford’s Republican enrollment stands at 4%, yet it is ranked fifth with one-third of its board consisting of conservatives/libertarians.
New York University School of Law
Students at New York University School of, which is ranked third overall by U.S. News & World Report, have an average LSAT score of 169 and an average GPA of 3.80 to 4.00. It offers 10 majors, most notably constitutional and economics, along with a diverse faculty comprised of a black woman from Liberia; a Ghanaian; an African-American man; an Asian woman; and a gay man.
University of Miami School of (three sentences) New students at the University of Miami’s Coral Gables campus are attracted to its academic excellence and collegial atmosphere where caring relationships develop among students as well as between students and their professors.
Stanford University Law School
Stanford University is a California-based institution that strives to provide its students with the best possible education. By offering undergraduate, graduate, and law degrees, Stanford University was ranked as the third-best school in the United States by the U.S.
News & World Report in 2018. One of the top schools in America, over four thousand people, applied for admission to Stanford School’s Juris Doctor program this year alone. This includes just under one thousand transfer students and approximately thirty percent of these applications came from international students who attended other institutions for their undergraduate degrees. If you are looking for an institution that boasts talented faculty members with a low student-to-faculty ratio (10:1) than this might be a great choice for you!
The University of Michigan – Ann Arbor, Fordham University, and New York University’s schools. Each has a few conservative students. Many are predominantly liberal though.
Regardless of their ideological leaning, nearly every school in the country features a mix of students with conservative and liberal beliefs. However, many schools have overwhelmingly one type of student or the other. This leaves those who may not hold any strong partisan views in limbo; do they keep to themselves or explore their beliefs?
Considering that there are such clear delineations at certain institutions, it can be difficult for either side to meet and engage with people who disagree with them. Furthermore, some conservative lawyers feel pressure to move left just to maintain connections. Meanwhile, progressives worry about how much progressive work they can take on without turning off their clients.
