Cravath’s Record-Breaking Bonuses Are Finally Here!

The Cravath bonuses are finally here! For the first time, associates at this top NYC law firm will receive a $1,000 holiday bonus in addition to their usual year-end discretionary bonuses!
This exciting news comes on the heels of Cravath’s recent announcement that it would be awarding $250 million in bonuses to its partners after its associates voted to unionize back in November 2015.
Who is it good for?
The team at Cravath, Swaine & Moore is earning recognition for their most recent announcement: the signing bonuses of up to $120,000. This is an unprecedented amount and paves the way for these attorneys to be recognized as some of the best-compensated in the law industry.
However, this offer is only good for qualified associates who received offers by July 15th, 2019, and are in full-time legal employment with the firm by January 31st, 2020. When will they get paid?
Every partner at Cravath takes home a minimum of $425,000 in bonuses this year (thanks to an adjusted carryover scheme). But not every junior associate takes home that kind of cash.
Partners who have been at the firm for more than eight years and are considered counsel (essentially retired) receive no bonus. Associates who have been at the firm for three years or less can expect to take home about $250,000 or so. Bonuses vary by department.
This isn’t a Cravath tradition; rather, it’s a relatively new idea that has served to reduce inequality among the partners.
What are they getting paid?
For many, this summer will be all about relaxing and laying out by the pool. Until now, it has been a common story to see companies cutting back on bonuses and paying employees less in this economy. Cravath is making sure that they are not only staying afloat but going beyond expectations.
This year, with a single exception, every class at Cravath was awarded a special bonus of $7000. For those who are taking the traditional path and trying to climb the ladder step by step, their salary grows incrementally while they work their way up from one level to the next.
Should I apply?
Prestigious law firm Cravath recently made headlines for awarding the highest bonuses in the industry for both its Associates and Managers. While the Associate bonuses max out at $225,000,
the Manager bonuses max out at $300,000. Despite this being a significant sum of money, I have doubts about whether or not it is worth it to work with Cravath. The reason for this is that most associates don’t make $225,000 in New York City where their offices are located.
To put things into perspective: only 4% of associates will make Partner by their tenth year at Cravath – if they were lucky enough to get in.
Where do I start my application process?
Who’s counting? The phrase diversity and inclusion has been repeated so many times that it has lost all meaning. Without a clear description of what the term means, the public is left to decide for themselves.
Some think that it is about identity – be it racial, gender, sexual orientation, or something else. Others may argue that diversity and inclusion are not the same thing at all, but should not be used as synonyms anyway.
It seems we can’t say anything definitively about diversity and inclusion because we’ve never formally defined it.
To have a robust conversation about this critical topic in legal education, Cravath needs to put its money where its mouth is by including an instructional module on diversity and inclusion in its summer program curriculum beginning with this upcoming academic year.
How do I stand out from the crowd of 600+ candidates?
Many law firms in the US will be making the final decisions about whom to hire this coming summer, and Cravath is one of the most popular choices. As a result, last year, 600+ candidates applied for 100 positions.
These numbers mean that many highly qualified candidates are vying for relatively few open spots. As such, here are some ideas for distinguishing yourself from the other applicants and maximizing your chances of being offered a position:
1) Research the firm thoroughly. Knowledge of the firm can set you apart from other applicants who might not have taken the time to investigate more than just a name.
Is there a deadline to apply?
This year, it was announced that Cravath will be providing annual bonuses in the millions of dollars to their employees. In the past, these bonuses have been given in the 5-10% range or even less.
However, this year they increased them to a whopping 35%. For example, an associate who started as a first-year associate at Cravath in 2016 and has been at the firm for 2 years will receive a bonus of $1 million.
It is no wonder that Cravath is so successful when it can provide such lucrative rewards to its workforce!

If the school isn’t sure about taking you in the fall, take matters into your own hands and apply again in the spring or summer! The worst they can say is no. Plus, this is your best chance to get noticed ahead of time since they have more space at that point.
So make sure to go out there and apply so you don’t have to spend time waiting around on pins and needles. The Cravath bonuses are coming and now could be your chance at more money than before because of it.
Managing your expectations about signing bonus packages
As it does every year, the competitive firm of Cravath, Swaine & Moore took home one of the most lucrative bonuses in legal history this week, as over 100 employees at the New York City office received a record $1 million each.
This announcement came just days after similar bonuses were announced at the firm’s Los Angeles office, which will give all those there a raise to $550 an hour, double their hourly wage. In total,
Cravath is shelling out nearly half a billion dollars in guaranteed bonuses for all of its lawyers. This comes only months after entering into a merger with Alston & Bird and Argo Group.
