All About Digital Personal Data Protection Bill, 2022 (DP Bill)

The Digital Personal Data Protection Bill, 2022 (DP Bill) is being drafted by the government to protect the personal data of Indians.

What is DP Bill?

The Digital Personal Data Protection Bill, of 2022 is a bill to implement data protection in India. It was introduced by BJP MP Piyush Goyal on 7th August 2018. The main intention of this bill is to protect the personal information (PI) of Indians while they are online or offline.

This includes all their online activities like browsing websites and social media accounts, etc., as well as any physical location where they spend time using mobile phones or laptops, etc., even if it’s just sitting at home watching television or doing something else that involves connecting with others through technology!

What are the existing laws?

  • The Data Protection Act, 2018 (DPA) is the first comprehensive data protection law in India. It was passed by Parliament on April 13, 2018, and came into effect on May 6, 2018.
  • The DPA provides a comprehensive regime for the processing and storage of personal information including sensitive personal data. It also lays down specific obligations on entities to protect such information against unauthorized access by third parties like hackers or cyber criminals.
  • However, it does not cover all aspects related to digital personal data protection as defined under DP Bill 2022 as well as other issues that may arise after its adoption such as cybersecurity threats and privacy issues at workplace, etc., which need further attention from the government officials before they can be addressed effectively through legislation Personal Data Protection Bill.

Why do we need a new law?

The existing laws are not enough to deal with the new challenges of digital personal data protection. The DP Bill is being drafted as a comprehensive law that will address all issues related to digital personal data protection, including:

  • Clear provisions for penalties and redressal mechanisms;
  • Effective security measures to ensure user privacy and safety;
  • Specific definitions for terms used in the DP Bill such as “personal information” and “sensitive personal information Personal Data Protection Bill;”

How will DP Bill work?

The DP Bill will be implemented through a new data protection law, which will have its committee. This committee will be called the “Privacy Advisory Board” and it will have the power to investigate and enforce penalties on companies that do not comply with the DP Bill. Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), Department for Promotion on Right to Information Act 2005/2018; Department for Promotion on Computerization Programmes, etc.; National Informatics Centre (NIC); Central Bureau Of Investigation CBI; Directorate General Of Indian Railway Traffic Police DGIRTP).

This bill will help prevent unauthorized access to sensitive information and make it easier for organizations that collect personal data to comply with government requirements.
